On the occasion of the christening of my blog, I thought it would be appropriate to share my entry for a contest I recently took part in. It's called the Great American Sentence, and, given such a title of ambitious optimism, a sentence on beliefs seemed suitable. I've condensed it for the sake of the contest, although here I present the expanded version:
Beliefs are the shunning of the lustre of novelty, the perceived impermanence of nature. They are the eternalising of one's being, transcending transient feelings and desires. Without them, we are but a sum of momentary selves, divided among infinitesimally small parcels of time, we are nothing.
Beliefs are the common thread; they unify the experience within us which we call our 'self'. Just as truth underlies all existence, beliefs form the foundation of our person. They are our truth, and, ultimately, serve to render the character immortal.
